Rothenburg ob der Tauber – Prague

Well, it was bound to happen – sooner or later the struggles with dodgy Wi-Fi and dark hotel rooms were bound to catch up with me (what the hell is it in Europe that they can’t put a light in the centre of the room & instead rely on desk lamps that are barely brighter than a candle?) Somehow in my endeavours to transfer all of my files from yesterday’s travel day between Rothenburg and Prague, I’ve managed to format the SD card from my camera without first moving the files off it. So basically all I have to show for the day are the few photos I uploaded to Facebook or Instagram during the day.

I took Rowdy for a quick last-minute walk in Rothenburg before we boarded the bus for Prague

To be honest, it could have been worse, as most of the images I took yesterday were taken through the window of the bus. We spent the majority of the day travelling the 378km distance between Rothenburg and Prague, and the only times that we actually stopped along the way were at truck stops that were crowded with prime movers. Trucks for the most part are not allowed to travel on Sundays in the EU, so most of the stops along the motorways do a roaring trade selling cheap alcohol and fried food to all the truckies that have parked up to make use of their shower & toilet facilities.

The view from our hotel room of the light dusting of overnight snow in Rothenburg

Still, there were a heap of pictures that I took before we departed Rothenburg, as after breakfast I had decided to take Rowdy for a quick walk before we got on the bus for the day. Plus the photos from the bus, while not the most picturesque, did show the amount of snow that had fallen overnight, which was only a light dusting in Rothenburg, but quite heavy in patches as we approached the German/Czech border. So I definitely have a dose of the Not-Happy-Jans right now.

Rowdy checking out the new digs in Prague, at the Art Noveau Palace

I’ve been talking about getting a new compact flash card for my camera, as it has a second slot for one of those in addition to the standard SD card slot – I’m not sure if that would have made a difference or not, but it certainly couldn’t have hurt. So suffice to say it’s number one priority when we reach Vienna on Tuesday. For now, I’ll just leave it at that, and say that we have arrived safe and well in Prague, and are staying at the magnificent Art Noveau Palace, a short distance from both the old town and Wenceslas Square. Last night’s meal was wonderful, the first set menu we’ve had that has been up to standard (the set menu meals in Germany having all been very sub par). Today’s walking tour of Prague and its accompanying photos will follow in my next post, once I’ve double-checked that all of the files have been transferred from my camera OK!
